The new Zoned Energy Rating Label

Energy rating labeling on air conditioners has taken a big leap forward, with the new Zoned Energy Rating Label (ZERL), mandatory on new reverse cycle split system models from April 1, 2020. The new label allows consumers to make a more informed decision for their heating and cooling; including how much heating and cooling power a model has, energy efficiency based on location, electricity usage and noise production.

So what new information does the Zoned Energy Rating Label provide?

• Cooling and heating capacity an air conditioner can provide
• Efficiency of an air conditioner, depending on where you live (save on your energy costs!)
• How much electricity the air conditioner will use, depending on where you live
• Noise production of the indoor and outdoor unit

As a consumer, this means you can make a more informed decision, based on how a unit will perform in your location.

For example:

if you live in Brisbane, you are in the HOT climate, and far more likely to use your air conditioning for cooling. You would read the efficiency star ratings and energy usage for the HOT zone.

How do I read the new ZERL label?

How can I compare different models?

You can compare the efficiency of different units using the star rating, but:

• you must compare products of the same or similar size
• due to the different methods of calculating the star ratings you shouldn’t compare the star rating on the old label versus Zoned Energy Rating Labels.

For a fair comparison of energy usage, ensure the models you are comparing are of similar capacity. These numbers can be found at the top of the ZERL label:

 

Size matters.

A correctly sized unit will make heating and cooling more efficient, affordable and comfortable.

Factors to consider include:

• Whether you are looking to heat/cool a single room, a larger space or your entire home
• Size of room/home (including ceiling height)
• External wall materials
• Insulation levels
• How many windows you have, their glazing, shading and orientation
